SECTION 1.
Sir R. Hart to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received September 22.)
Dear Sir Edward,
38, Cadogan Place, London, September 22, 1909. I AM just back from Englefield Green, where I spent a couple of months, and I now write to say that my return to China will again be deferred, and, instead of starting in October, I doubt if I shall be off before New Year. But at this juncture I am feeling somewhat perplexed, and must therefore refer to you. A report is circulating in Peking, and also appearing in Chinese newspapers, to the effect that the Foreign Office no longer objects to the candidature of Sir R. Bredon. If this be so, my return to China might be more inconvenient than useful, and I should therefore like to know whether the report is correct or not. If the situation has thus changed, I don't see that I need go back; but, if it has not altered, I shall go on with my preparations to return. Should you desire to see me I can call any day you may fix.
Sincerely yours,
ROBERT HART.
